Why grinding matters
Clenching and grinding can overload teeth, ceramic restorations and implant components. Signs can include wear, fractures, muscle tenderness or repeated loosening, although some people have few symptoms.
Design around the bite
The clinician should assess jaw relationships, tooth wear, space and contacts. Material choice alone cannot compensate for an unstable or overloaded design. The number and position of implants may also be influenced by force.
Protective appliances
A night guard may be recommended after treatment. It needs a precise fit and periodic review. A guard reduces force on restorations but cannot guarantee that chips or mechanical complications will not occur.
Report changes early
New clicking, bridge movement, repeated chipping or a change in bite should be reviewed. Small maintenance problems can become more complex if ignored.
