Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small fixture placed into the jawbone to support a crown, bridge or denture. Implant treatment may replace one tooth, several missing teeth or a complete dental arch. The restoration above the implant is planned separately and should be designed around the patient's bite, gums and available space.

For a single missing tooth, one implant may support an individual crown. Where several adjacent teeth are missing, implants may support a bridge. Patients missing most or all teeth may be assessed for full-arch options such as All-on-4 or All-on-6, or for an implant-retained removable denture.

The correct solution is not determined only by the number of missing teeth. Bone anatomy, neighbouring teeth, gum condition, bite, general health and cleaning ability all influence the plan.

Implant planning commonly includes examination, medical-history review, X-rays and CBCT imaging. The dentist assesses bone height and width and considers nearby anatomical structures. Active dental disease should be treated before or alongside implant care.

The implant is placed surgically under an agreed form of anaesthesia. Depending on the site and stability, a temporary restoration may sometimes be provided. The implant is then allowed to heal and integrate with the bone before the definitive crown or bridge is fitted.

Bone grafting or sinus lift surgery may be recommended when additional bone support is needed. These procedures can affect cost, healing and the number of visits.

Patients travelling for dental implants should understand who will provide each stage of treatment, which implant system is proposed and how records will be supplied. They should also receive clear instructions about medication, healing, oral hygiene, follow-up appointments and whom to contact if a problem occurs after returning to the UK.

Implant treatment has potential complications. These may include infection, failure to integrate, bone loss, gum inflammation, nerve disturbance, sinus complications, component loosening and damage to the restoration. Smoking, poor plaque control, uncontrolled health conditions and teeth grinding may increase risk.

Implants are not maintenance-free. Daily cleaning and periodic professional review are required. Restorations and components can require repair or replacement over time.

Costs vary according to the implant system, number of implants, final restoration, imaging, extractions, bone procedures and case complexity. Comparing quotations requires checking what is included and whether the price refers only to the implant fixture or also includes the abutment and crown.
